Joyful, Joyful we adore Thee. For me the Christian faith is a combination of joy and fearful awe. The church I attended as a child expressed in so many ways the love of God in Jesus Christ, and for me the essence of a spiritual life is the love of God. I entered Bangor Theological Seminary late in life, and was amazed at the caliber of teaching under such scholars as Ann Johnston, George Hunsinger, Burt Throckmorton, Marvin Ellison and others. While serving as Associate Pastor of the Congregational Church of Camden Maine UCC I developed skills as both teacher and preacher. The annual three day retreats which I led, though varied in subject, consistently provided deep spiritual teachings along with joyful experiential activities. During these years I developed a personal practice of Centering Prayer, a practice which I then introduced to my congregation and outside groups. My doctoral program at Bangor Theological Seminary focused on teaching others to develop and lead small spiritual groups. Several churches have developed strong small group programs through my training. Seeking quiet in my own life is essential to my participation in the groups which I lead.
