Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are some options for lodging in the area?

The Alcyon Center (alcyoncenter.org), the small residential retreat center on Mount Desert Island, fills quickly. However, there are many options for lodging on island, including the following three inns:

  1. The Bass Harbor Inn (bassharborinn.com or 207.244.5157),
  2. Bass Harbor Cottages (bassharborcottages.com or 207.244.3460) and
  3. Bass Harbor Gables (bhgables.com or 207.244.3699).

All offer a range of accommodations and are within a ten-minute drive of the site of our programs. If none of these appear to suit your needs and you would like further recommendations, please contact Eric Erickson, Guild Coordinator, at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. 2. What are the nearest airports in the area?

The Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport (BHB, http://www.bhbairport.com) is closest, just before the bridge to Mount Desert Island. Further away but with more daily flights is Bangor International Airport (BGR, http://www.flybangor.com). The Bar Harbor Shuttle Service (http://www.barharborshuttle.net) makes runs for both Bar Harbor and Bangor. It’s run by Helen Witham, who may be reached at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or 207.479.4560.

It does not cover breakfast meals, and we do not offer lunch on Sunday. All meals will be served at Pacific Hall, the site of our weekend programs this year. 5. Where are Northeast Guild events held?

Most of the Guild events are held at Pacific Hall in Tremont, on Mount Desert Island, Maine. Some retreats are also held at the Alcyon Center in Seal Cove on Mount Desert Island, Maine. Click here for directions to Pacific Hall and the Alcyon Center.

6. What is the difference between a Day of Teaching and a Retreat?

In general the Day of Teaching is more of an overview of the weekend's topics & tailored to engaging with a larger group, whereas the Retreat goes deeper into those topics with a more experiential or workshop approach. It greatly depends on the teacher and their topic. In many events, the Retreat weekend often picks up from where the Day of Teaching leaves off.
